The frame for the glass was made from 12mm aluminium channel sourced from the local hardware store (Bunnings).  To assist with bending the channel around the top corners of the template, the aluminium had to be annealed (softened).  Because aluminium does not change colour as you heat it you can easily end up with a molten pile of alloy where your channel once was.  A simple trick to prevent this is to draw lines on the channel with a felt tip pen and then gently heat it until the black lines disappear.
